to stay below average. system kind of rotating around the big old low up in oregon is right there might produce more than just some low clouds for mendocino county and lake county. possible mostly cloudy skies later on as the tail end of that system kind of swings by. it's also not only giving low clouds but any time you get a little system coming in that enhances the drizzle. a lot of 50s out there with local drizzle and temperatures even with the overcast it's cool. and there's a no doubt about it sea breeze. boot scooting it all the way out to the sacramento valley. temperatures out there have come way down as well. that's pretty impressive system for this time of year. i mean last in june we had two of those systems that came down and visited us, gave us rain. remember rain beginning in june end of june. this time of year it's almost a miracle it makes it that far. the end result for us is a lot of low clouds and drizzle. very, very cool pattern for july. afternoon highs 50s 60s 70s i did go with one 80 that was clear lake but i almost went 79 there. and there will be 60s and

for july. fog, sun and wind. slightly warmer inland on the weekend but not a big jump up. temperatures i think will just recover and get back into the 80s. by the coast i still think 50s and 60s. system moved into the pacific northwest actually settled into oregon and the southern end of that has just been sweeping in low clouds. you can see how they bank up. they'll be a decrease in the low cloud deck because it's getting so cool aloft and also the inland temperatures have been plunging there's really not a lot to support it but it's still there. and every wind direction is almost out of the west or southwest. the delta breeze howling all the way to sacramento. two 60s, san jose and san jose state. but upper 50s and mid-50s. that system continues to carve itself out right out of the portland. for this time of year that's an extremely impressive system to make it that far and have this much of an impact. low overcast drizzle fog temperatures held in check cool for july no doubt about that. today, tomorrow bottom out and then a slight increase friday as we head into the weekend. still l

the right hand side. so this crash here really is causing a big slow down on 880 northbound coming up through san leandro. looks like maybe only a couple lanes are getting through on this crash northbound 880 before 98 southbound traffic may be slowing as well because of the crash. let's go out and take a look at some other things. 237 nice commute there crossing 880 and getting up to 101. and if you're driving in contra costa county, highway 4 of course slow. and 680's also slow heading north up to the benicia bridge. for the rest of walnut creek and concord commute looks pretty good. 6:21. let's go to steve. >>> sal, thank you, sir. we have low clouds and fog. not much there yesterday but it's arrived today. it will burn off. we'll have sunshine today. but mild to warm. i don't think we're going to warm up that much. we'll still stay slightly below average for inland temps and plenty of low clouds and fogs keep temperatures in the 60s and 70s. see it's built in rapidly but some areas are reporting not just low clouds but fog. westerly breeze coming right through the golden gate out

they'll have temperatures in the 80s. they're really not getting involved in this big warm up if you're headed out to santa clara, they're getting in the 90s. but we're getting a lot of fog here. it's shallow but it's moving into parts of the south bay. so fog then sun, cool to mild to nice to warm to hot. depending on where you are in proximity of that fog and coast. it's a cool pattern, inland upper 80s. 90, 95 for those warmest locations unless you're really far away from the coast and maybe a few pushing in a little bit further than that. there are signs that next week another weak little system will come in which will start another cooling trend that won't be until saturday or sunday. 50s in these temps. concord 55. same for napa, san rafael. san francisco, oakland, livermore 58. and high pressure continues, i think it's put on the brakes. i really do. what we had yesterday is taking into today. maybe some tropical clouds coming around that. again it moves into the sierra of southern california. sunny inland, warming ends by friday, maybe even saturday. we'll have to keep an

because the u.s. postal service is facing some big financial problems. the agency says it lost $8 billion last year. part of it is because of the recession, there has been a steep decline in advertising mail but there's also a lot of first class mail that is now being sent electronically and packages are being carried bid private carriers. the postal service says it will consider opening village offices. postoffice desks and counters that would be placed inside businesses, town halls and community centers. postal service is expected to -- across the country for possible closure. we don't know yet which bay area postoffices may be on that list or how many of them. but about 10 minutes ago i did get a response from a u.s. postal service spokesperson in washington, d.c. she said at 10:30 eastern time they're going to be sending out that list of the 3,600 postoffices. so 10:30 eastern time so about an hour and a half from now for our pacific time. we should get that list and take a look at it to see how this is going to affect postal service here in the bay area. allie rasmus. >>> tim

now 6:05. officials at one peninsula school have a big clean up to do. a fire broke out at daly city's skyline elementary school on christian avenue. this happened about 11:30 last night. just look at the pictures. the portable classroom went up in flames. the damage includes the building itself, everything inside, books, chairs, audio- visual equipment. took firefighters about 15 minutes to put it out. authorities don't know what started the fire but it apparently started outside of the portable building. no word of any injuries and students by the way return to school on august 17th. >>> meantime firefighters say an overnight house fire in san francisco caused about $350,000 damage. this fire started just before 2:30 this morning at a home on melrose avenue. the flames then spread to a second house. took firefighters about 20 minutes to contain that one alarm fire. no injuries have been reported. authorities think the fire started in the living room of the first house, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >>> the book written by kidnap victim jaycee dugard d

cruz. that is it. we don't have the big surge like we've had the last couple of mornings. we will start off with sunshine. sunrise over the big city. i look for inland temps today. normal high temps for july 20th. we are forecasting 92. it has been awhile since we've been over that number. calistoga 91 average this time of year. and gilroy 88 went slightly above. went 90 degrees. most locations inland temps have been so far below for awhile. coastal temperatures haven't been that far. they have been near average. there is still patchy fog going down the coast. you have to give it credit when the fog wants to form there is nothing to support it. so 50s and 60s on the temps. however, here comes another low dropping in so today looks like a warmup and then we will start to back off a little bit and see temperatures slide down. today unless you are right by the waters edge there won't be that much fog. it will be sunny and warmer for many. the fog will be enhancing and increasing. thick fog. mainly hugging the coast. and inland temps have no problem warming up today. so 60s, 70s, 80s,

is pretty big, about 30 feet across and you can actually put your hand underneath the median there and it will come out on the other side. it is -- it has forced crews to shut down one lane of highway 87 southbound in the alma avenue on-ramp. caltrans discovered the problem tuesday, they came out, they poured some gravel and then last night they compressed that gravel and found that it sunk about a foot below the earth's surface and you can see where that concrete is exposed, all the cracks there. so they shut down some lanes on the freeway at 9:00 last night. we are close to west virginia street just to give you an idea of where we are on 87, and again one southbound lane is closed as is the alma avenue off-ramp. but the on-ramp from 280 is open and crews are expected to be out here all morning repairing the sinkhole so you definitely want to avoid this area. we would suggest using south alma avenue to -- expressway to 87 or also take monterey road as well and cut across to west capitol expressway to 87th. live in san jose, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> we want to go

budget cuts tied to san jose's big budget crisis. on any given day a fire truck or fire engine will be out of service at one of san jose four stations. these cuts are raising public safety fears both in and outside the fire department. >> response times increase. fire intensity grows. and so upon arrival our firefighters will be faced with a greater workload, higher risk, and greater demand. >> that is not good for anybody. >> there will not be any re ductions in staff on sunday or the fourth of july. there are cuts that take place today. >>> san francisco city leaders failed to meet today's budget deadline. they were huddled in closed door meetings in city hall until late last night. they are still trying to figure out the final pieces of a huge budget package. now they have agreed on nearly all of the major points in ed lee's $6.8 billion spending plan. the remaining sticking points include proposed social services cuts and contracting -- contracting out security at some city hospitals. >>> the u.s. senate canceled its holiday recess as the big debate continues. republicans made a

stolen property. >>> well, san jose no longer has a big fireworks show on the 4th of july. but some people put on their own illegal display. pretty professional there. it's been a tradition every 4th of july to set off fireworks, but the law says they are illegal. we talked to a retired fire captain who lives there and he fears that it's just a matter of time before something bad happens. >> you know it can happen in four, five, seven or ten minutes when you have a good wind and old structures that can just take a block out. >> no one out there just doing dumb stuff. they're not doing it with their families and parties they got going on. >> firefighters were out last night trying to educate people about the dangers of setting off their own fireworks. the police chief was also out. he says they don't have the resources to crack down on the activity. the east bay also saw its fair share of fireworks. our ktvu cameras spotted this display from skyline road in oakland around 9:00 last night. oakland is another bay area city that did not hold an official fireworks show for the 4th of jul

jackhammering. it's located right under that portion of the sidewalk next to that big hole. east bay mud says that that hole was actually created when water burst through the ground. now crews tell us here that this is an eight inch cast iron pipe that ruptured and they will be removing that section of damaged line and replacing it so they can turn the water back on. the water flooded a nearby house last night and the homeowner had just moved here from seattle. all of his moving boxes are now water logged. >> fire department was helpful. we built a makeshift barrier in the back to try to keep the water from coming in the back door from the garage. >> reporter: workers to not have a time line on when the pipe will be fixed. they're currently pumping water out right now. once they get a look at that pipe they'll have a better idea of exactly what they are dealing with. again, this section mt. diablo boulevard and village center drive. this is all blocked off here. we have one lane in each stretch of the roadway here that's blocked off. don't know how long that's going to be that way but we'll o

another big cat walk is set to go into place. i guess a lot of people are noticing it. >> that is right. you can see it from where we are standing. we have a great view of it from here on treasure island. they are the reddish orange strip. those are the so-called cat walks. cal tran has installed three of them. you can see three of them right there. they are supposed to install the fourth and last one sometime at the end of this month. if we zoom in for you you can see the cat walks are flat. they are like that for a reason. they will have to walk on the strips so they can install the cables for the eastern span suspension bridge. once the cable is up it will be 4,000 above where the cat walks are. that main cable is more than a mile long and made up of thousands of smaller cables but we have been tolds work in stringing that cable is supposed to start later this year. reporting live on treasure island allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. >>> thank you. time now 6:46. san francisco police say they have recovered the gun that is at the center of a controversy. an ature video this one here s

, sir. >> big trade for the giants are you happy. >> good, good bat to have. temperatures yesterday warmed up inland by the coast, just that fog hanging on. so, inland areas it burns off and it's sunny and we warm up. but i think we topped out yesterday or we will just carry it into today. fog, and it's clear, even in areas that warm up into the 90s they get up into the upper 50s. we'll have that july spread on the temps about 35 degrees for some between some on the coast and some inland. high pressure continues to hang out but it's not going to make it too far to the coast. it's not going any where. the system that was in the pacific northwest kicks off. that allow it is high to move in but looks like things have stabilized here. low mid- to upper, 260. west southwest at 12 at fairfield. nothing hollowing it's very close to what we had yesterday. maybe just a hint stronger. so i don't think temperatures warm up any more than they did yesterday. if you're away from the coast it'll be warm to hot. if you're away from the coast it'll have to do with fog. the only thing we'll have to k

traffic looks good getting up to highway 18. at 5:08 let's go to steve. >> another big fog bank out there and it's giving us also some drizzle so we have to deal with that. today will be very similar to what we had over the weekend. breezy to windy at times, already gusts to 30. about the same tomorrow, by the end of the week looks like that fog will be getting a little shallower, it does look warmer 80s and 90s coming back for us in the sacramento san joaquin valley. we keep dealing with a low coming in from the pacific west, that ramps up the fog. then high pressure in the middle of country tries to head back west but it's been trying to do that for the last two months. we have some fog in the coast, but it has no problem getting back out. everybody coast and inland 80 degrees. west south wind or a west wind when it's 27 at travis and southwest at vacaville. any time they get a south wind in this kind of a pattern that's a cool breeze. once the low kicks out, temperatures will gradually start to come up. it's a gradual the warm warm up. breezy to windy and that will be out of the

police shooting at a san francisco bart station. ktvu tara moriarty says there are still big questions after last nights deadly confrontation. >> reporter: police did recover broken class and three bowl casings. it's providing clues to what happened last night on the civic center station platform. sirens wailed as an ambulance rushed the suspect to the hospital. he was pronounced dead within an hour. the initial 911 call came in at 9:30. authorities say the suspect was on the station platform. he appeared intoxicated, stumbling around and wobbling. now two bart officers arrived at 9:45 and within one minute three shots were fired. at least two bullets striking the suspect. investigators found saturdays of glass at the scene. >> they will be met with required force. something occurred that they were threatened. something forced them to use utilized force. >> reporter: in the wake of officer grant shooting, there may be a heightened public awareness regarding this solution. it has doubled training hours since that incident. it is conducting an investigation alongside san francisco police
